Saw Palmetto Danger?

BPH

Unless you already have prostate cancer, do not take saw palmetto because it may cause cellular damage and death in healthy prostate cells.

Saw palmetto is good stuff … if you have prostate cancer!

More than 20 controlled double-blind studies have demonstrated that saw palmetto berry extract (containing 85-95% fatty acids and sterols) is effective in relieving the major symptoms of BPH, including increased night-time urinary frequency, the most bothersome complaint.BPH

For years nobody knew exactly how saw palmetto worked, but we now know that it shrinks the prostate gland by killing prostate cells-both malignant and healthy cells. Surprisingly, while saw palmetto is selectively toxic to prostate cells and prostate cancer cells, it has not been researched as a treatment for prostate cancer. The big question is, “Should saw palmetto be used as a preventative supplement if it actually works by poisoning the prostate gland?”

Live Longer with DHA

Researchers enrolled 34 volunteers, aged 39-66 years, half of whom consumed a half-teaspoon of DHA daily, while the other half received a daily half-teaspoon of olive oil for 90 days, in addition to regular meals. DHA reduced the number of small LDL particles by 22% and increased the number of large LDL particles by 127%. No changes were noted with olive oil. (Kelley DS, Siegel D, et al. Are You Getting a Full Spectrum of Mixed Carotenoid in Your Diet?

Carotene Rich Foods

Unless you eat a wide variety of carotenoid-containing foods (tomatoes, kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, broccoli, etc.) you are probably not getting adequate amounts of the full range of carotenoid compounds— powerful antioxidants that protect our cells and tissues from the damaging effects of free radicals.

And even if you eat like a rabbit, because of natural factors like growing conditions, the carotenoid content of one piece of fruit or vegetable and another can vary by as much as three-fold!

Fact is, most carotenoids are much better absorbed from supplements than from food. But most multivitamin supplements don’t come close to supplying you with a full spectrum of mixed carotenoids, either.

Find out how you can make sure you’re getting a full spectrum of mixed carotenoids in the article, Caroteniods Are Better Absorbed From Supplements Than From Food!

Take Alpha Carotene for a Longer, Healthier Life!

Carotene Rich Foods
A research team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention followed more than 15,000 adults who participated in the Third Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, estimating the direct relationship between concentrations of serum carotene and death. The researchers compared the carotene concentration with death records and found that the individuals with the highest levels of alpha-carotene were more likely to be alive 14 years after they began the study, regardless of their lifestyle, demographics or other health risk factors. The team also linked higher blood alpha-carotene levels to a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease or cancer, the two top killers in the U.S.

The Mystery of the Toxic Town!

Here’s a quick story…

In 2006, the residents of the beautiful coastal community of Esperance in Western Australia noticed that the local seabirds were inexplicably dying. This was not just a handful of dead birds, but thousands and thousands of birds. The local officials investigated and determined the birds were dying of acute lead poisoning. Needless to say, the community was concerned. Where was the lead coming from? Was the town’s population at risk?

Later, it became clear that the people were very much at risk. The dead birds saved thousands of human lives by alerting the people to a silent killer in their midst. You see, the birds functioned much like canaries in a coal mine, dying first so the people could see there was a problem.

Here’s what happened…

A few months before the birds began dying, the port of Esperance began receiving trainloads of lead ore from a mine about 500 miles to the north. At the port, the lead ore was transferred from rail cars to ships. Now, because Esperance is located on the coast and faces the Great Southern Ocean, it experiences strong winds for much of the year.

After months of investigation, including testing residents for lead contamination, it was determined that wind-blown lead particles had contaminated the town’s air, water, and food supplies. The entire town was slowly and unknowingly being poisoned to death with lead! Had it not been for the dying birds, and the discontinuation of the lead ore shipments, the ultimate affect on the people of the town would have been catastrophic.

And while this may be an extreme example, it still illustrates the point. Environmental toxins are everywhere and can infiltrate your body without your knowledge.

You don’t need to live near a lead mine or a windy seaport to be exposed to toxic heavy metals and other environmental toxins. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a more pristine and picturesque place to live than Esperance. But this story helps demonstrate the fact that no matter where you live, even if it seems pristine, environmental toxins abound. And if you do not remove them from your body, the affect on your health can be disastrous!

To learn more about environmental toxins and more importantly, how to remove them from your body, please read the article The Key to Surviving Toxic Heavy Metals!

Treat Depression Naturally With St. John’s Wort

Signs of depressionSt. John’s Wort has become popular as an effective solution to treat depression naturally.

A 2009 government survey reports 1 in 13 adults (18 and older) experienced at least one bout of major depression annually. The study found that less than one-third of those individuals were treated for their depression.

People are often reluctant to seek medical help for several reasons, including the cost of medication and its side effects.  Solutions to treat depression naturally should be considered as an ethical  first step in feeling better.

Solutions to Treat Depression Naturally

A concentrated herbal extract made from St. John’s Wort has been researched to treat depression naturally . One study, consisting of 23 randomized trials including a total of 1757 outpatients with mainly mild or moderately severe depressive disorders, was published in the British Medical Journal.

The study found that St. John’s Wort (Hypericum extracts) were similarly effective as standard antidepressants. Also, there were only two (0.8%) drop outs due to side effects with hypericum and seven (3.0%) with standard antidepressant drugs. And side effects occurred in only 50 (19.8%) patients on hypericum, as opposed to 84 (52.8%) patients on standard antidepressants.

St. John’s Wort also contains an inhibitor of serotonin reuptake, which is responsible for the recycling of serotonin back into the “sending” cell. By inhibiting serotonin reuptake, more serotonin is left in the synaptic cleft between adjacent nerve cells, which increases the serotonin stimulation of the adjacent (postsynaptic, or “receiving”) cell.

Compared to synthetic pharmaceuticals, St. John’s Wort may be a better solution to treat depression naturally.  Studies indicate that St. John’s wort:

  • Is a safe and effective way to treat mild to moderate depression over long periods of time
  • Is similarly effective as standard antidepressants
  • Has fewer side effects than standard antidepressants

A Swiss study evaluated 440 patients suffering from mild to moderate depression and treated them with 500 mg. of St. John’s wort for up to one year. Although mild side effects such as upset stomach were reported—which may or may not have been related to the treatment—the researchers reported that St. John’s wort is a safe and effective treatment for mild to moderate depression over long periods of time. They also found that it is especially suitable for preventing a relapse.

An Australian randomized, controlled trial used a combination of St. John’s wort and Kava to treat 28 adults with major depression and anxiety disorders. First, the participants were given a placebo for two weeks. Then, over two four week periods, some were given St. John’s wort and Kava, and others were given placebo. In the end, the individuals who took the supplements experienced less depression and anxiety.

No serious side effects were observed during the trial, and only two cases of gastrointestinal upset were noted.

Researchers at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran recently published a meta-analysis (an analysis of the results of several studies) comparing St. John’s wort to pharmaceutical antidepressants (SSRIs). After analyzing 13 randomized placebo controlled clinical trials they found that, overall, St. John’s wort is just as effective as pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of depression, and that it has an advantage because it doesn’t produced any side effects.

A meta-analysis at the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research, Department of Internal Medicine, Technische Universitaet Muenchen, Munich, Germany analyzed 29 trials (which included 5,489 patients), comparing St. John’s wort with placebo or standard antidepressants. The evidence suggests that the hypericum extracts tested in the trials 1) are superior to placebo in patients with major depression; 2) are similarly effective as standard antidepressants; c) and have fewer side effects than standard antidepressants.

Conclusion

SSRIs remain the most popular treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. But fewer than 50% of all patients have total success with these drugs and significant side effects are common.

Based on the latest studies comparing St. John’s wort to placebo and SSRIs, it is safe to say that St. John’s wort is a proven safe and effective alternative to synthetic SSRIs, and does not produce adverse side effects. St. John’s Wort is an ethical solution to treat depression naturally.

Vitamin K2 More Important than Calcium

Bone X-ray
Bone X-rayIf you or your loved one are concerned about osteoporosis—and you should be—here is the simple but too often overlooked truth about how this prevalent bone disease operates. What the public at large tends not to realize — and what your doctor may not be aware of — is that both osteopenia and osteoporosis are entirely preventable.

Vitamin K has recently been identified as an important nutrient in bone health.  Several studies have indicated that low vitamin K levels are associated with a higher risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures, and that supplementation with vitamin K increases bone mass and mineralization of the bone matrix.

It is important to note, there are many forms of vitamin K, vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) being the most common. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is the most important nutrient in the calcium recycling process. Researchers have recently found that supplementation with menaquinone-7 (MK7), a long chain vitamin K2 molecule, is the form that protects against osteoporosis and reduces the risk of bone fractures. Furthermore, when combined with vitamin D, the MK7 form of vitamin K2 has actually been shown to promote bone growth. It does this by increasing the production of osteocalcin in osteoblasts, which allows calcium to anchor to bone and thus build bone. It also inhibits the production of osteoclasts, which break down bone.5

Natural Solutions for Periodontal Diseases

CranberryAccording to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, about 80 percent of U.S. adults currently have some form of gum disease (periodontal diseases). It ranges from gingivitis, simple gum inflammation, to serious disease that results in damage to the bone.

Research has shown that there is an association between periodontal diseases and other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. For instance, the bacteria that cause periodontitis can travel through your bloodstream to the arteries in your heart, triggering a cycle of inflammation and arterial narrowing that contributes to heart attacks.

It’s not surprising that nutrition plays a key roll in oral health.  It is surprising how fast some nutritional supplements can benefit oral health.

Men, how’s your flow?

After about age 40, the prostate begins to grow in just about every male. This usually results in reduced flow urine flow. Sometimes an enlarged prostate is a sign of cancer, but usually the result is a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. Most doctors refer to an enlarged prostate simply as BPH.
In some men, an enlarged prostate does not cause urinary problems—probably because their urethra is wider than average, or because the gland tends to enlarge outward. In most men, however, as an enlarged prostate develops, the prostate presses against the neck of the bladder or urethra, squeezing the pipe shut, like stepping on a garden hose. This pressure can make it difficult to urinate and results in a variety of symptoms.
